It is well known that premature babies are at high risk of mortality and morbidity.  Therefore, it is desirable to take whatever precautions necessary during pregnancy to assure that a woman carries to term.

One of the primary causes of prematurity is vaginal infection.  Fortunately, vaginal infections are quantifiable and treatable.  The early detection and treatment of these infections in the vaginal tract can reduce the pre-term birth rate, especially if antibiotic treatment is started early enough.

The normal vaginal tract is acidic, indicating that the vaginal fluid contains a variety of micro-organisms able to fight bacteria and other pathogens.  When acidity levels fall, as reflected in higher pH values, resistance to infection is compromised.

The Careplan® Vph Test Glove provides a simple way to measure pH values and determine the acidity of the vaginal environment.  This self-examination tool can help identify those at risk of infection and prompt early intervention by healthcare professionals.  In clinical trials women using the Careplan® VpH Test Glove had significantly fewer premature and low-birth-weight babies than those women who did not use the glove.

Now, pregnant women—from the early stages of pregnancy to the 34th week of gestation—can measure their ph values so that in most cases appropriate therapy can be initiated.  It is recommended that the glove be used to test the vaginal pH once or twice a week for best results in detecting risk of infection.
